In order to validate any egg dropping of any sort, I amended the project to fit my economic/business curriculum of my school. I instituted 4 roles within the groups that could be made out of the class. There was a project manager, an accountant, spokesperson and builders. I gave a budget of 1 leva per person and the accountant had to report any expenses they had as a group. The spokesperson had the task of introducing the group and there methods in front of the class, while the builders had to report what kind of materials they used and how it was constructed. The project manager allowed some to assume leadership roles and acted as a liaison between the group and the instructor. He or she was also in charge of assessing the performance of the group and their input aided the grading of the overall project.

Wow, this is so smart, Elizabeth! What a nice resource for other people who are doing your job now and in the future. Also, different than I what I surmised. :P

I've done this with 8th graders, and something about the age just turns this into chaos. But, I tried a different variant. I had the bank robbers leave the room and go out into the hallway to form their questions. Then when they came back the whole class asked each suspect their questions. It works much better for me, just to remove teenager insanity from the equation.

I love using lyrics and songs with older kids. Something else I've done is asked students to bring in the lyrics to some of their favorite songs in English, and then scan them for bad grammar (not too hard to do, trust me). I then make an exercise where the students have to correct the mistakes in their favorite songs.

It's a site that you have to register for but they have great activities and worksheets for more advanced students. The topics range from different countries to the Rolling Stones to idioms. They also always include teacher's notes, which says how to go about teaching the lesson, variations on the lesson and the answers. There's a new lesson every week and there is about a year's worth of activities on the site at all times.
